Random (King) of Amber

In the early books Random is a drummer, a jazz musician, who likes to fly and gamble and dance and do the occasional drug and generally party. He's a party guy. He's got a snappy temper and feels like he has a lot to prove to his siblings - or at least his brothers. He's the youngest child in the Royal Family (Oberon has a few Affair Babies kicking around).

His colors are red, orange, and brown.

Random has one child, an adult son named Martin whose mother was the daughter of the Queen of Rebma. It was an affair that did not end well. Morganthe ended her life soon after Martin was born, and Random had no real interaction with Martin until he was grown.

As part of his punishment for what happened to Morganthe, her mother Moire took Random prisoner in Rebma. She sentenced him to marry a blind Rebman named Vialle "for a year," as a marriage to a Prince of Amber would elevate her status in the Rebman Court. The two wind up falling in love.

The one bore a wily-looking little man, with a sharp nose and a laughing mouth and a shock of straw-colored hair. He was dressed in something like a Renaissance costume of orange, red and brown. He wore long hose and a tight-fitting embroidered doublet. And I knew him. His name was Random.

But I knew that on the one hand he was nobody’s fool; he was resourceful, shrewd, strangely sentimental over the damnedest things; and on the other hand, his word wasn’t worth the spit behind it, and he’d probably sell my corpse to the medical school of his choice if he could get much for it. I remembered the little fink all right, with only a touch of affection, perhaps for a few pleasant times it seemed we had spent together. But trust him? Never.

He was a little guy, maybe five-six in height, weighing perhaps one thirty-five.

“You’re thinking,” he said while I thought, “’How far can I trust Random this time? He is sneaky and mean and just like his name, and he will doubtless sell me out If someone offers him a better deal. ‘ True?”

He was a homicidal little fink, who I recalled had always been sort of a rebel. Our parents had tried to discipline him in the past, I knew, never very successfull.

His eyes gleamed then, and his old smile appeared. He ran one hand through his straw-colored hair and wouldn't let go of my eyes. "Are you going to do it?" he asked. "Maybe," I said. "Don't 'maybe' me, baby. It's written all over you. I'd almost be willing to go along, you know. Of all my relations, I like sex the best and Eric the least."

My brother Random looks and acts, on occasion, like an asthmatic, teenage hood - but once we had fenced together for over twenty-six hours to see who would call it quits.

"This time, I was not looking for a place where I would be especially important. That cna get either boring or difficult fairly quickly, depending on how responsible you want to be.

"I am not angry with Random for having told you," I said. "His judgement has always been acute and geared to defense."
